Summary
If selected, you will be responsible for assisting with research to develop safe and effective methods for alleviating economic, hazard, nuisance, and health problems in agriculture caused by a wide variety of wildlife species. You will comply with Animal Welfare Regulations, and provide the record management for animals which will provide the means of meeting Good Laboratory Practice standards.
Duties Help
- The duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Work with other team members to provide care for caged or penned captive animals.
- Reviews records for which you have assigned responsibility and ensure records are clear, accurate, and secured when personnel rotations occur.
- Inputs data and follows security procedures to preserve the records. Extracts information from the computer and provides specific information when requested.
- Ensures that appropriate veterinary medical care, as determined by a veterinarian, is followed.
- Collects daily records of animal behavior, response to environmental enrichment, and for forming and following an environmental enrichment schedule.
- Provides continuous monitoring to ensure that Animal Welfare Act regulations, Good Laboratory Practices, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) are followed on all situations .
- In cooperation with the Supervisor, assists with research studies and other activities at the facility.

- Must possess a valid State driver's license; and/or commercial license, if required, in order to carry out assigned duties. Incumbent must be able to operate a government-owned or leased, as well as State-owned motor vehicle(s).
- Proximity to hazardous materials, animal diseases, potentially dangerous wildlife, and the use of potentially dangerous equipment requires the use of strict safety precautions.
- Some of the work will be conducted under biohazard conditions.
Qualifications Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
FOR THE GS-05 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-4 grade level) that demonstrates:
- Experience in the technical methods, principles, and standards of wild animal care.
- Experience recognizing normal and abnormal physiological states in animals and to provide medical treatment when required.
- Experience solving problems that arise during captive care and maintenance of animals.
OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be in animal science, animal biology, zoology, wildlife, or veterinary medicine.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.

- This education must have been successfully completed and obtained from an accredited school, college, or university
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-5 GRADE LEVEL: Applicants may have combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education This position does not have an education qualification requirement.

- First time hires to the federal government normally start at the lowest rate of the salary range for the grade selected.
- Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. Any travel, transportation, and relocation expense associated with reporting for duty will be the responsibility of the selected employee.
- Locality pay will vary based upon the selectee's duty location. A final salary determination will be made upon selection.
