Job Description

General Responsibilities

A Youth Peer Support Specialist (YPSS) is an individual with lived experience and journey in receiving public mental health services and supports. A YPSS is an individual who possesses a unique perspective to treatment, due to their own experience with mental health. The YPSS draws from their personal growth experience to carry the message of hope and recovery to the youth we serve. Much of this support is offered in a coaching/mentoring manner, where the YPSS cultivates and secures a connection with the person served, while encouraging personal responsibility, empowerment, and wellness. The YPSS will support youth who are working toward their own individual goals and will be an essential member of multi-disciplinary treatment teams. The YPSS may be involved in program development and training of other team members. Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

Regular and predictable attendance is an essential requirement of this position.

Support and promote a recovery focused environment. Use experiences with personal growth to offer hope, encouragement, and reassurance to the people served within the program.

Participate as assigned in clinical and staff meetings and serve on other organizational committees as clinically appropriate.

Participate in the person-centered-planning process as requested by the people that we serve.

Work with program leadership to implement programmatic changes by utilizing evidence-based practices (ex. Trauma Informed Care) to improve the quality of our services and outcomes.

Assist the people we serve to become active participants in their treatment and encourage self-advocacy and wellness.

Document interactions in the electronic medical record and coordinate with other treatment team members as necessary.

Work as part of the interdisciplinary team to provide the best possible care and/or treatment for everyone.

Assist clinicians with co-facilitating group programming. Complete the appropriate group paperwork required within the program.

Provide services in the consumer's home and/or community-based settings.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Must meet the age and lived experience criteria outlined in the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Youth Peer Support guidelines
  • Must be between 18 and 26 years old and have personal experience receiving mental health services as a youth or young adult.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Must have a primary diagnosis of mental illness, a current or former consumer of mental health services, must demonstrate leadership and advocacy skills and a strong dedication to wellness.
  • Certified or willing to become certified as a Youth Peer Support Specialist. Enrolled in the approved Michigan Department of Health and Human Services training curriculum upon hire and maintain certification

Preferred Education And Experience

  • One or more years' experience as a Youth Peer Support Specialist.

Required Licenses Or Certifications

  • Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license and operable, insured automobile for authorized travel.

Knowledge Of

  • Working knowledge of resources within MCCMH and outside of Macomb County Community Mental Health.
  • Knowledge of applicable computer applications.
