Job Description

Position Summary
The Registered Nurse assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care provided to a group of patients. This nurse leads the nursing team in delivering care as directed by the attending physician and in collaboration with other healthcare providers, in alignment with the hospital's philosophy and policies. Actively participates in fostering an environment that supports patient, family, physician, and employee satisfaction. Ensures decision-making is based on patient- and family-centered care philosophy, utilizing evidence-based practices, with a focus on safety, customer satisfaction, and quality outcomes.

Scope of Service
The Registered Nurse provides nursing care to individuals and groups requiring specialized knowledge, judgment, and skill derived from biological, physical, behavioral, social, spiritual/cultural, and nursing sciences. The Registered Nurse functions within the full scope of nursing practice as defined by the Board of Nursing of the applicable state and in compliance with hospital accrediting bodies.

  • Assesses, formulates nursing diagnoses, plans, implements, and continuously evaluates the effectiveness of individualized nursing care plans.
  • Analyzes and prioritizes problems, making sound judgments based on logic and critical thinking.
  • Safety and Quality Improvement
  • Improves safety and quality of healthcare systems by minimizing risk to patients and the healthcare team.
  • Administers medications and executes regimens as authorized by state licensure.
  • Incorporates quality measures and data to understand individual and system performance.
  • Identifies strategies to reduce risk and promotes error prevention techniques.
  • Reports safety concerns and events, including near misses.
  • Informatics & Technology
  • Promotes and incorporates technology to communicate, manage information, mitigate errors, and support decision-making.
  • Navigates patient care and documents status, interventions, responses, and outcomes in an accurate, timely manner in the electronic health record.
  • Responds appropriately to clinical decision-making supports and alerts.
  • Advocates for the integrity and privacy of healthcare records.
  • Communication, Teamwork & Collaboration
  • Interacts effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams to foster open communication, mutual respect, and shared decision-making.
  • Functions as the coordinator of the patient’s plan of care through interaction with the healthcare team.
  • Acts with integrity, consistency, and respect for diversity.
  • Delegates appropriately and escalates concerns through the chain of command.

  • Demonstrates leadership in facilitating goal establishment and fostering a culture of teamwork.
  • Maintains a current working knowledge of the scope of practice as outlined by the state board of nursing.
  • Participates in healthcare teams to improve patient care, work environment, and overall satisfaction.
  • Assigns, directs, delegates, and supervises ancillary personnel and support staff in patient care tasks.
  • Systems-Based Practice
  • Participates in hospital-endorsed practices to enhance patient care.
  • Plans, organizes, and delivers patient care within the unit’s workflow.
  • Conducts bedside reports/hand-offs and ensures meaningful hourly rounding occurs.
  • Escalates concerns through appropriate channels to maintain safety, quality, and patient satisfaction.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • The RN must complete 25 contact hours of continuing education during their licensure period.
  • At least 2 contact hours must be related to pain and pain symptom management.
  • At least 1 contact hour must be related to implicit bias training.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in nursing process application.
  • Ability to respond effectively and efficiently to critical situations.
  • Competence in basic nursing skills.
  • Ability to evaluate daily practice for errors and pursue corrective action.

License:

  • Current state license as a Registered Nurse.

Certification:

  • Current CPR training.
  • Specialty certifications as required.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

WORKING CONDITIONS

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Demonstrates knowledge and use of standard precautions and PPE.
  • Uses safe patient handling equipment as needed.

Physical Demands:

  • Exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals, temperature changes, and bloodborne pathogens.
  • Must meet all health requirements identified by the organization (e.g., PPD, respirator training, vaccines).
  • Frequent movement throughout the hospital, prolonged standing, lifting, and carrying of patients or equipment.
  • Regular bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and squatting.
  • Occasional sitting, stair climbing, and kneeling.
