Position Description

This is a non-Civil Service announcement. The Nashville Entertainment Commission (NEC) invites dynamic, visionary, and well-connected leaders in the music, film, and entertainment industries to apply for the role of Executive Director. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of Nashville’s creative economy while serving as the public face of the NEC.

The NEC is a newly empaneled Metro Commission, dedicated to championing and elevating the entertainment industry in Nashville and Davidson County. The Commission is funded by Metro Nashville and overseen by its Commissioners and the Metro Nashville Mayor’s Office.

The NEC Executive Director promotes the Commission’s initiatives and mission and acts as the official spokesperson for the Nashville Entertainment Commission. The director develops and maintains productive relationships with studio and independent producers, commercial producers, production companies, TV Networks, streaming services, documentary, and other media encouraging them to produce their projects in Nashville. The director fosters, develops, and promotes productive relationships with the Nashville creative community and the music, film, and entertainment industries at large. The director also, working with the Mayor’s Office, develops and maintains relationships with the various branches of Metro Nashville government, and the Tennessee Entertainment Commission. The director also develops and maintains productive relationships with state legislators and other government officials; members of the press; other media arts organizations; educational programs; financial contributors; and other influencers, stakeholders and opinion leaders who impact the commission’s success.

This position will accrue 1 sick day and 1.25 days of vacation per month .

This position requires management of a schedule that often requires evening and weekend commitments as well as the ability to travel 20% of the time.

Typical Duties

Oversees Activities Of The Nashville Entertainment Commission

  • Works with Commissioners to develop committees and annual goals.
  • With the Commission, develops and updates a strategic plan that delivers on the Commission’s mission outlined in Metro Code Section 2.147.
  • Promotes the entertainment industry in Nashville and Davidson County and recruits projects and employment related to the entertainment industry.
  • Promotes to the fullest extent allowed by law the success of all individuals, regardless of personal characteristics and life experience, within the entertainment industry.
  • Works to address quality of life issues facing individuals in the entertainment industry in Nashville and Davidson County.
  • Supports small and independent businesses within the entertainment industry in Nashville and Davidson County.
  • Promotes education initiatives and programming related to the entertainment industry.
  • Works with the Tennessee Entertainment Commission to achieve this mission.
  • Promotes, markets, and supports the Nashville Office of Entertainment.
  • Assists the entertainment industry with securing necessary permitting.
  • Builds relationships for community engagement.
  • Assists with location scouting and maintains a location library and production directory.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with Metropolitan Nashville departments and other public and private partners including local, state, national, and private industry partners.
  • Performs any additional actions necessary to carry out the duties and responsibilities established by Metro Code Section 2.147.
  • Advises the Mayor, Metro Council, and other officials on issues related to music, film, and entertainment policy.

Performs Related Administrative Duties

  • Provides and oversees all administrative support functions related to the Nashville Entertainment Commission and its meetings, including reports, agendas, and minutes for all related meetings and maintenance of all records related to the Commission.
  • Oversees division budget process and purchasing practices.
  • Writes and/or edits letters, reports, and public responses.
  • Plans and attends conferences, tours, workshops, and related activities.

Performs personnel-related duties for office staff in conjunction with the appropriate Metro authorities:

  • Interviews prospective employees.
  • Assists in selecting new employees.
  • Assigns and reviews work.
  • Approves vacation and sick leave.
  • Evaluates employees’ performance.
  • Counsels and disciplines employees when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, and five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in music, film, and/or entertainment industries. Additional years of direct industry experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree. (1:1 ratio)

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Prior fundraising experience with achieved goals
  • Prior staff leadership and organizational management experience
  • Prior marketing, event management, and public relations experience
  • Professional experience in more than one, but ideally all 3 industries - music, film, and entertainment
