Overview The Chief Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the engineering division at Residence Inn San Jose South. In the absence of the Director, the assistant will assume the administrative, financial, and operational aspects of the hotel related to engineering. Responsibilities Assist in developing and implementing plans to maintain property, equipment, grounds, and other assets in a safe and acceptable state of repair. Ensure the hotel complies with all local, state, and federal laws. Supervise and train all Engineering staff in customer service, empowerment, standard operating procedures, and loss prevention. Create and post all Engineering staff schedules. Develop and adhere to the annual departmental budget. Participate in developing financial forecasts and monthly profit/loss reviews. Implement preventative maintenance programs for all hotel equipment. Ensure all emergency and life safety equipment and systems are inspected, tested, and certified according to Highgate Hotel standards. Participate in energy conservation initiatives. Review guest and meeting planner comment cards to promptly identify and resolve problems. Ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Assist with vendor contract administration controlled by the engineering department. Handle room maintenance requests promptly and courteously. Respond immediately to alarms, determine their cause, assess emergency status, and report findings to the Front Desk, taking action as necessary. Assist with special projects and renovations as needed. Support and participate in all Highgate Hotel programs and safety committees. Qualifications At least 3 years of progressive facilities management experience in a hotel or related field, or 2 years college plus 1 year of management experience. High school diploma or equivalent. Stationary Engineer’s license if required by local code. Skills in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boiler operations, and general maintenance. Ability to work long hours sometimes. Physical ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly. Maintain a warm, friendly demeanor at all times. Effective verbal and written communication skills with all staff and guests. Ability to listen, understand, and clarify concerns. Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines. Attend all required meetings and trainings. Participate in Manager on Duty (MOD) coverage as required. Maintain regular attendance and high standards of personal grooming. Comply with hotel standards and regulations for safe and efficient operations. Proactively identify and resolve problems.
