Library Archivist

University School of Nashville has an immediate opening for a creative and collaborative archives professional to serve as a part-time Archivist and join our outstanding and well-established library team. This position will work 20-25 hours per week while school is in session mainly during the school day with occasional after-hours work as well particularly during Reunion weekend in the spring. The Archivist reports to the Library Director and participates fully as a member of the library department while also working closely with the offices of Alumni & Development and Marketing & Communications to provide archival support for their programming and materials.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain an accessible retrievable collection using online collections management software including a publicly accessible interactive archival website (Omeka) and a searchable catalog of the collection (ArchivesSpace)
  • Prepare and organize archival records for items in the collection that are not yet cataloged using a classification system to facilitate access
  • Preserve records documents and objects (including born-digital items) digitizing and/or copying records to film videotape audiotape disk or other formats as necessary
  • Record the origins and historical significance of archival materials
  • Plan and execute displays of archival materials in various settings
  • Direct activities of volunteers who assist in digitizing cataloging exhibiting and maintaining collections of valuable materials
  • Collaborate with K-12 teachers and library staff to plan and deliver lessons incorporating archival materials
  • Provide reference services and assistance for users (including faculty/staff students families and alumni) needing archival materials
  • Establish and administer policy guidelines concerning public access and use of materials
  • Participate fully as a member of the library team and in the life of the school community
  • Perform other duties as determined by the Library Director Director of Communications and Director of Development

Qualifications

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelors or masters degree in archival practices and/or a related degree (such as public history or library and information sciences) with a concentration in archives and/or two or more years of related archives experience
  • Experience organizing maintaining and cataloging archival material

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong computer skills and proficiency in online collections management software; experience with Omeka and/or ArchivesSpace preferred
  • Demonstrate a genuine appreciation for children and adolescents
  • Work collaboratively with students colleagues and the USN community
  • Work independently and take initiative when appropriate
  • Communicate thoroughly accurately and concisely both verbally and in writing
  • Possess an eagerness to learn and ability to adapt to change
  • Maintain a positive and professional demeanor
  • Demonstrate integrity and confidentiality

The School

University School of Nashville is an independent non-sectarian co-educational day school with enrollment of 1080 students kindergarten through twelfth 1915 the George Peabody College for Teachers opened Peabody Demonstration School (PDS) USNs predecessor which earned acclaim for its curriculum and 1974 Peabody College announced plans to close PDS and a group of parents alumni students and teachers reconstituted and re-chartered the school as University School of Nashville.
